Ghada Al-Rawahi, MD, DTM&H (London), D(ABMM), FRCPC
Medical Microbiologist, BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital; Medical Lead, Infection Prevention & Control, BC Cancer Agency; Clinical Associate Professor, UBC
Dr. Al-Rawahi is a Medical Microbiologist and Infection Control Officer at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital, where she is also the Site Director for the Medical Microbiology Residency Training Program, and is the Medical Lead of Infection Prevention and Control at the BC Cancer Agency. Dr. Al-Rawahi is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Her research and publications focus on areas of emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms, healthcare-associated infections, and emerging pathogens. Dr. Al-Rawahi completed her residency in Medical Microbiology at the University of British Columbia. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in medical microbiology. She has completed the UBC Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control and the Certification Board of Infection Control (CIC).
Daniel A. Daggett, PhD
Director, Product Stewardship and Sustainability, Sealed Air
Dr. Daniel Daggett has a bachelor’s degree in biology and a Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from the University of Wisconsin, where he received a fellowship from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the Berman and Blieir Award for his toxicology research. Dr. Daggett has devoted his 17 year career to improving public health and the environment by developing and implementing approaches to reduce chemical exposures, increase operational efficiency, and eliminate waste. Currently, he is the Director of Product Stewardship and Sustainability at Sealed Air, where he is responsible developing and implementing sustainability strategies across the business. Dr. Daggett has published widely and is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics such as green chemistry, sustainability, life cycle assessment, carbon footprint, and product safety.
Joanne Archer, RN, BTech, MA, CIC
Education and Practice Coordinator, PICNet
Joanne received her RN diploma at Douglas College, her Bachelor of Technology Degree in Specialty Nursing at BCIT, and her Masters Degree in Disability Management at UNBC. She began her healthcare career in 1977 as the youngest nurse at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital. Since then, Joanne has provided direct patient care at several facilities, small and tertiary, throughout BC, mostly in critical care areas. Joanne began in Infection Prevention and Control in 2003 with Northern Health. After a stint as the Regional Manager of Infection Prevention and Control, she joined PICNet in 2008, where she currently works as the Education and Practice Coordinator.
Robert Garcia, BS, MMT (ASCP), CIC
Infection Control Preventionist
Robert Garcia is an Infection Control Professional and has been a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control & Epidemiology (APIC) for 30 years. After originally training as a microbiologist via the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the New York School of Medical Technology, he did his Infection Control and Epidemiology Training at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and the Centers for Disease Control. He has been certified in infection control since 1984. Currently he is the Senior Instructional Support Specialist in the Healthcare Epidemiology Department of the Stony Brook University Medical Center, State University of New York. He is also the President and Founder of Enhanced Epidemiology, Inc, an infection control consulting firm. Mr. Garcia has been the principal researcher on many studies on healthcare-associated infection prevention; he has won many awards for his work; and is the author of numerous journal publications on the institutional costs of infection, the prevention of HAIs, and reducing occupational exposures.
Manav Gill, RN(c) BSN MHA
Manager Public Health & Education Services, Clinical Prevention Services, BC Centre for Disease Control
Manav Gill is the Public Health Manager at BC Centre for Disease Control. She oversees provincial service delivery for TB Services and also leads the STI/BBI/TB Education department. With a background in nursing, she started her career in rehabilitation before finding her passion in public health. She has worked in a variety of other roles, including public health nursing at Vancouver Coastal Health and Director of Nursing and Clinical Services at Options for Sexual Health. Manav was born and raised in Vancouver and completed her Bachelor of Nursing at University of Victoria, and then went on to complete her Master of Administration from University of British Columbia. She currently is a member of many provincial committees and co-chairs the Provincial TB Nurse Advisory Committee.
Mark Heller, MBA
President, Hygiene Performance Solutions
Mark has over 25 years of experience leading healthcare environmental hygiene programs in over 570 healthcare facilities (acute, long term care, ambulatory care); including executive leader of North America’s largest publicly operated environmental services organization. His CV of achievements includes the launch of a national award-winning environmental stewardship awareness program into healthcare facilities across Canada. Mark’s post-secondary education includes hotel management, project management, and a graduate degree in business administration (MBA), specializing in B2B marketing from Queens University. Currently Mark is the president of Hygiene Performance Solutions, a performance coaching organization dedicated to improving in-house operated environmental hygiene programs. Mark is also the national chair of the “Environmental Hygiene Interest Group” for Infection Prevention on Control – Canada (IPAC – Canada).
Bonnie Henry, MD, MPH, FRCPC
Deputy Provincial Health Officer, Office of the PHO, Ministry of Health
Dr. Bonnie Henry was appointed as Deputy Provincial Health Officer for the Province of BC effective August 5, 2014. Previously, she was the interim Provincial Executive Medical Director, Medical Director of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control and Public Health Emergency Management with the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, and Medical Director for the provincial Emerging and Vector-borne Diseases program. She joined Toronto Public Health in September 2001 as Associate Medical Officer of Health, where she was responsible for the Emergency Services Unit and the Communicable Disease Liaison Unit. In 2003 she was the operational lead in the response to the SARS outbreak in Toronto. She is a specialist in Public Health and Preventive Medicine and is Board Certified in Preventive Medicine in the US. She has worked with the WHO managing an Ebola outbreak in Uganda, and is one of the provincial and national leads for the BC and Canadian EVD response. She is the author of “Soap and Water & Common Sense”, a guide to staying healthy in a microbe-filled world.
Dr. Victor Leung
Infection Control Physician, Providence Health Care
Dr. Victor Leung completed medical school and residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of British Columbia. He subsequently completed combined fellowships in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at McGill University. He is now the physician director of the Providence Health Care Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and also works in Infection Prevention and Control.
Ron Morley, RPN, ADPN
Infection Control Nurse, Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission
Ron has been a Registered Psychiatric Nurse since 1990 and has worked for the Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission (“Colony Farm”) ever since graduation. He has worn many hats over the course of those years: Direct Care Nurse, Shift Supervisor, Patient Unit Manager, and for the last nine years has been the Infection Control Nurse. Based on this experience and after many viewings of the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, he has drawn the conclusion that in many instances life certainly does imitate art.
Robyn Roscoe
Robyn Roscoe is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with 13 years of experience in the management of large health research projects, and over 20 years experience in project management in scientific and technical fields. She is currently Director of Management and Administration for the BC Cancer Agency Genome Sciences Centre (GSC), and is responsible for project, operations and finance management. Together with the team of 20 project managers and coordinators, Robyn is responsible for management of all project and platform work at the GSC, representing a total portfolio of nearly $206M. Robyn has previously worked in the environment sector and oil & gas industry as a project manager, operations specialist and environmental manager. She holds a BSc from the University of Manitoba. Robyn is committed to expanding knowledge and interest in the field of research project management, and has developed a series of presentations and workshops aimed at enabling successful research through sound management and leadership.
Jocelyn Srigley, MD, MSc, FRCPC
Jocelyn Srigley has been interested in infections ever since seeing the movie Outbreak. After finishing medical school at University of Toronto, she trained in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Medical Microbiology at McMaster University. She subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in Infection Prevention and Control at University Health Network and a Master of Science in Health Services Research at University of Toronto. She is currently the Associate Medical Director of Infection Prevention & Control at Hamilton Health Sciences and an Assistant Professor at McMaster University. She also works part-time as an Infection Prevention and Control Physician at Public Health Ontario. Her interests include hand hygiene, behaviour change, and organizational culture.
Manal Tadros
Medical Microbiologist, Fraser Health
Dr. Manal Tadros graduated from Medical School at Cairo University. She received her MSc and PhD from Cairo University in Clinical Pathology, with Medical Microbiology as her subspecialty. She worked as a Medical Microbiologist and Infection Control Consultant at Cairo University Hospitals. She moved to Canada in 2005 and after obtaining her Medical Council of Canada certification, she joined the residency program at University of Toronto medical microbiology department for re-training, and obtained her Royal College certification in 2013. Since October, 2013 she has been working as a medical microbiologist at Fraser Health. She is interested in antimicrobial resistance, improving diagnostics in the medical microbiology laboratory and other quality improvement initiatives.
