• Reservoirs of pathogens: the microbiological risks of respiratory medical devices

      Date: September 20th, 2022

      Time: 05:30 am PST

Speaker: Professor Colum Dunne, University of Limerick, Ireland

      Objectives:

      – Understand that respiratory medical devices are ubiquitous, and are used in both clinical and domestic settings globally
      – Discuss our work on understanding what microbes are present on medical devices as they arrive from the manufacturer, if they are sterile or simply low microbial burden
      – Discuss scenarios/ cases that illustrate: how such devices, in cystic fibrosis or COPD settings, may become colonised with potential pathogens; how and why cleaning may not happen or may not be effective including involvement of water source at home and in hospitals; and an example of a novel device to overcome this problem
